Cities are shaped by their transportation systems. Layouts of cities can often be dictated by the dominant transport available. However, not all such transportation is green and efficient, and the last century has been witness to the depleting effect of fossil fuels on both environment and health. India, too, is witnessing the first signs of increased awareness about creating environmentally sustainable transportation systems. Urban India is witnessing the evolution of citizen groups that advocate lower carbon footprint via car-pooling, cycling, public transportation, electric vehicles, etc. In Navi Mumbai, RECITY is working on projects that develop cycling and improve pedestrian mobility in certain key areas.
