Wetlands include all lakes and rivers, underground aquifers, swamps and marshes, wet grasslands, peat lands, oases, estuaries, deltas and tidal flats, mangroves and other coastal areas, coral reefs, and all human-made sites such as fish ponds, rice paddies, reservoirs and salt pans. Wetlands can be thought of as "biological supermarkets." Wetlands are nature’s measures against both droughts and floods, of which India has repeatedly been a victim. Despite their vital importance to humans, across India, wetlands are seriously threatened by reclamation and degradation through processes of drainage, landfilling, discharge of domestic and industrial effluents, disposal of solid waste, and overexploitation of the natural resources that they offer. The new Airport will destroy a huge part of these wetlands in Navi Mumbai. Students of Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Architecture, Kharghar along with mentors, Samantha Das and Studio POD and Vanashakti worked over two months to come up with a design for a Mangrove Park near the proposed Navi Mumbai Airport,

Till date, Stalin has filed over 18 Public Interest Litigations (PILs) to save the environment, forests, rivers and wetlands. Currently he is campaigning to protect 3000 acres of open spaces and forest lands in Mumbai from being taken over by developers.
City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) is a city planning organization created by the Government of Maharashtra. CIDCO was formed on 17 March 1970 under the Indian Companies Act of 1956. Its purpose at the time of its creation was to develop a satellite town to Mumbai, Maharashtra India to ease traffic congestion in the city and provide open spaces, playing fields, housing and industrial sites outside the city.
